Fairy Tale

Platforms: PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360

In 2007, Stormfront Studios and designer Joe Wampole (who previously worked on BloodRayne) pitched an eerie and dark take on many established fairy tales – such as Cinderella, Pinocchio, Beauty and the Beast, Snow White and many more to Vivendi Games.

Cinderella concept

According to what researcher Susan Flint found, Fairy Tale was going to be a hack and slash action adventure heavily inspired by games like Devil May Cry, Heavenly Sword, Resident Evil and American McGee’s Alice. The targeted platforms were the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and a couple of concept artworks were made for this pitch.

According to an interview with Hardcore Gaming 101, Joe Wampole shared a brief summary of some of the characters the team wanted to explore in this early concept pitch:

“Cinderella was a firestarter and could shape glass to her will through heat (unfortunately, she burned off most of her flesh when her powers first manifested, so she wears a wig and a frosted glass mask). Beauty is the tragic villainess. She’s good, but transforms into an evil beast alter ego. The player would have choices in the game, one of which would involve finding the magic rose and breaking the curse to save Beauty… or killing the beast, which would also kill Beauty.”

While this concept looked incredible, it didn’t survive. After the merger between Activision and Vivendi Games in 2008, Activision decided to cancel any ongoing proposed pitches and Fairy Tale was one of them. Activision never greenlit this concept, so it didn’t even start pre-production.

With thanks to Susan Flint (Cleon999) for all the research. The concept art provided is the property of Stormfront Studios and Joe Wampole.
