Acolyte

1989 Clockwise

Platforms: ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC

Acolyte is a cancelled Clockwise title that was practically complete when it was cancelled, and a neat multi-screen arcade adventure which had versions created for ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC. It seems the game was originally being developed by Video Images, but then picked up by Clockwise to finish off and sell to someone like Alternative Software, but sadly it never happened.

Today we’re adding an early prototype version of the Amstrad CPC edition thanks to Dean Hickingbottom, which doesn’t have all the enemies, has slightly different titles and also may have differences in the map as well.

Whilst we’re at it, we’re adding the ZX and CPC versions that had been previously recovered by Dean and released around 2017. The ZX edition was released as part of a double pack by Psytronik a few years ago as part of a Kickstarter for the Crash annual.

We’ll add more details in the future from Dean about the development – for now, check out the previews, and let us know if you spot any major differences in the prototype. Dean also says you can press Q and F to play with the back screen routines.

With a huge thank you to Dean Hickingbottom for preserving and sharing with Games That Weren’t.
