Space Ace for the Commodore 64

by Gregg Kustudic and Scott Carey

This game reproduces the first scene of the arcade laser disk classic Space Ace.

The play mechanism consists of providing a short tap on the joystick in the correct direction, and at the correct time. A single quick press of the fire button may be required at certain times as well. A single use of the stick or button is called a move. Performing a timed pattern of moves without error is the skill required to beat the game.

The time between moves averages around one second. The play mechanism is unforgiving of wrong and missed moves. These will cause a short animated death sequence to play, after which the game will resume from the beginning.

The sequence of moves required to win Level 1 are identical to those used in the Arcade version.

As with the original Space Ace, an area on the screen roughly indicating the correct move flashes when a move is required, and a beep indicates that a correct move has been made.

The moves are as follows:

(behind rock flashes) right
(behind rock flashes) right
(ground flashes) left
(ground flashes) down

(ship flashes) left
(ship flashes) left

(energize word appears)
fire or do nothing to skip the energize sequence

(gun flashes) fire
(cliff flashes) right

(ground flashes) left
(ground flashes) right
(gun flashes) fire
(gun flashes) fire

(end of energize sequence)
