1992 Anco / Imagineer
Platform: Super Nintendo
Following on from recovery of the long-lost NES version of Tip-Off, we now have a version for the Super Nintendo that was also in production around the same time.
Originally developed by Enigma Variations for Anco and set for release via Imagineer, the SNES version was ultimately canned when Anco’s partnership with Imagineer ended. With high manufacturing costs and no major backer to support production, the financial risk proved too great in the end. It seems that development was so early, no announcements from what we can see were made in the press about the game.
Compared to the NES version, the SNES edition didn’t get very far at all and only as far as a set of technical demos utilizing Mode 7 for the pitch. We have managed to save these, including one where you can move some blank sprite objects around. Nothing else has surfaced, including any sound files.
The development was done briefly by none-other than Zach Townsend (of Batman C64 fame), but we know little more at this stage. For now, check out these very early proof of concepts to get a rough idea how the SNES version of Tip Off was going to play.
With a huge thank you to Mark Greenshields and Darren Melbourne for allowing us to preserve this title.
