Pocket Panic is a great homebrew title by Steve Jones that was released in 1999 for the Game Boy Color as part of the Bung Coding competition. It is a neat modern mix of Loder Runner and Panic Planet, and with possible inspirations from other games.
Today we’re adding what might be a later prototype of the game which was being tidied up/adjusted for Graphic State in 1999. It features a different start intro, but also very different sprite graphics – with a Jetman main character and shaded in enemies, baby and bomb sprites.
There are likely other differences too and could be some variations in levels. Looking online, I could only see the competition version with the Chuckie Egg main sprite – so we don’t think this version is out there. It seems this may have been an attempt to tidy up and release as a budget title (like Graphic State did with ATV Racing).
The game was discovered within the archives of Mark Greenshields, who collaborated with Graphic State briefly. We hope to learn more soon, but for now – check out this very different version of a neat platform/puzzler.
With thanks to Mark Greenshields for allowing us to preserve and Michele Raguso for the link.

Thanks Michele – great to see the competition page for the game, i’ll add the link to the page. As you can see – the competition version has very different sprites overall and different intro screens.
