Eutanasia

1991 Expose Software / Synchron Assembly

Platforms: Atari ST and Commodore Amiga

Eutanasia is a vertical shoot-’em-up that was being created by Synchron Assembly, the Swedish demomakers who wrote Audio Sculpture. It was due to be released under the Expose Software label.

According to magazine previews, the game was showcasing remarkable technical achievements, particularly on the Atari ST. The game was reportedly running at 50 frames per second, maintaining flawless scrolling and performance. It also would boast a rich audio design, with music including numerous digital sound effects.

Players must survive waves of enemies, with the game featuring vertical parallax scrolling that adds a sense of depth. The smooth sprite animation, combined with large, detailed sprites and a profusion of enemies on screen, would apparently create an intense and visually impressive experience.

Originally designed just for the Atari ST, an Amiga version was also reportedly in development too, with promises of even more enhanced features and performance compared to the ST version. The game was scheduled for release in 1991/1992, but simply disappeared. It isn’t clear just how far the game had got either.

The game was created by Martin Liesén and Johannes Söderqvist and thanks to AtariMania, a compiled version of Eutanasia’s source code was made to create a playable demo of the game. It may be unstable according to reports, but its a great glimpse of how the game was shaping up and it really does look good so far. There could well be more out there.

There were some details from either Martin or Johannes added on Demozoo.org which said the following:

“This version is over a year old. During the last year there have been problems with the company that should distribute the game. We had a picture professionally made on an IRIS computer, the person that made this picture didn’t get the money he was promised.

Also we never got a hard disk we were promised. All this has had a bad effect on the developing of this game. Actually it has been quite much development anyway but they have been mostly restructional. So the current version is not very much visual better. It also is more of a test version at this point. That is: quite buggy. That’s why we decided to go with this version.

Besides what can be seen in this version the game will include huge end-of-level monsters, animating background and off course lots of different weapons and enemies, etc.

Although this is a very promising product I am sorry to say that you cannot contract us with this product. The author, Martin Liesen, is working on other projects. He also wants to concentrate more on school so he doesn’t want to tie himself up with some contract.

Anyway I think this a pretty good example of what we are capable of doing. And I think that the Falcon version can be very nice.”

If you know anything more about the development, please do get in touch – where we hope that some day we’ll be able to experience this promising sounding shooter in a more complete state.
