Today we are bringing you a very early test build of Croc on the Colour Gameboy which is of part of the first level map, but with a lot of content and presentation missing at this stage and no enemies or collectables. Score panel isn’t finished and contains junk characters.
Here you can move Croc around the slopes and up on the platforms, before hitting a dead-end. However, if you keep pausing and unpausing whilst jumping, I found that you will essentially “jump climb” up past the dead-end to be able to see a bit more of the map.
The cave is at the very end, but it doesn’t do anything, and you can drop out of the map and crash the prototype very quickly. The builds only currently work in specific emulators – I wasn’t able to get working in mGBA, but did get both working in sameboy and bgb. There are two builds which seem to be practically identical – apart from some very minor code differences.
As a bonus, we also recovered an early game design document created by the team which outlines the plans for the title, which may have some slight differences to the final game. All of this can be found below within the downloads.
We think that the game may have been built using some of the codebase of an abandoned Olsen Twins game that Argonaut may have been doing. Unfortunately there were no reliable dates to put to the prototypes, though the design document was last updated in June 1999.
