Splitz Game Boy prototypes

I loved Split Personalities on the Commodore 64, and I was massively surprised to learn that a Game Boy version was produced in later years called Splitz. It had completely passed me by, and I first discovered the game when finding a series of prototypes in relation to the title.

The game works incredibly well on the platform, so if you haven’t played it before – I recommend checking it out. In the meantime, we have a series of prototypes of the game from various stages of development, and thankfully with dates for most.

The two earliest prototypes from August and September I believe were written by Steve Hey before Richard Naylor took over programming duties. These prototypes show a simple puzzle shuffle game as a starting point with a test image. The September version has it so that you can request the tiles one at a time, similar to the final game.

October 1992’s build is getting closer, but is more of a demonstration of all the screens. There seems to be a different title screen which was dropped, and featuring a Margaret Thatcher image based from Spitting Image. You are shown each completed puzzle, and can navigate through all the screens. There might be some screens which did not feature in the final game.

The remaining prototypes are much closer to the final game, with some credit differences and minor differences throughout. There are likely parts which are a bit rough round the edges and needing final tweaks/improvements before release. If you spot anything in particular which is different, please let us know.

With thanks to Mark Greenshields for making it possible to preserve these prototypes.
