JetPak DX was a wonderful Game Boy Color homebrew game based on the classic Ultimate Play The Game title, released in 1999 and submitted to the first Bung Enterprises Gameboy Coding Competition. Today we have two early prototypes for you of the game.
The first has a great intro picture which doesn’t seem to have been used for the final game and is credited to Cosmigo, a game development studio from Germany. It seems that in 1999, they were perhaps keen to take on the game, but for reasons unknown (possibly copyright), it never quite happened. The intro picture displays, but that seems to be it – we don’t think the game is present.
The second is a much earlier v.0.08 beta of the game, with different titles, earlier sprites and a little rougher round the edges. It still plays a decent game and has most of the original present. There is no sound at all at this stage either. These were both found within a Cosmigo GBC archive, which is a German-based development studio that is still going today.
A nice early glimpse at a fun homebrew title which I remember very well seeing during the early days of Game Boy Color emulation. Let us know if you find anything else which stands out a lot in these prototypes.
