Duel

1995 Finetime Software

Platform: PC (DOS)

Our next entry into the Games That Weren’t archive is an extremely early and unfinished PC DOS shooter called Duel. The idea of the game would have been to fight against a CPU or second player and duel against each other across a parallax landscape.

The game was being written by Finlay Munro, and was based off his cancelled Commodore 64 game of the same name that was due for release by Quicksilva in the 1980s. It’s likely that graphics are by either Wayne Billingham and/or David Bland.

Overall, it was intended as a bonus title to go alongside Tiny Troops on the PC version, which saw release on the Amiga, but not on PC and Amiga CD32 (A story for another day!). It should have appeared as a bonus title alongside Arcwar, which we added a little while back in 2025 on the site.

We don’t think the game got any further than this intial test scrolling demo, which seems to quit out as soon as you press anything. There are no ships present from what we can see. Hopefully we will get to learn more in the future, and see if perhaps there is anything more to find.

With a huge thank you to Mark Greenshields and Darren Melbourne for the opportunity to see this title preserved.
