The Addams Family: Pugsley’s Scavenger Hunt (NES) Prototypes

Following on from the recent recovery of a slightly earlier NES prototype of Elite, we now present a series of earlier builds of The Addams Family: Pugsley’s Scavenger Hunt. This was a game developed by Enigma Variations for Ocean Software back in 1993.

We have found a total of 7 prototype builds in varying stages. For each, we’ve added the timestamp for now of the original files that were recovered, though they may not be an accurate representation of order.

The changes seem to be relatively subtle in places. We found mostly differences in the start-up screens and logos, which you can see in the gallery and also score panel differences. However, “add-21-01-93.ntsc.nes” seems to be the most significantly different and quite early compared to the rest.

In one of the rooms in this particular prototype, Lurch can be found sitting at a piano. It’s very likely i’ve just missed it, but I can’t see this room on the maps for the game. It is very possible that this segment was dropped, and therefore there could be other rooms and bits which didn’t make the final cut.

The prototype also lacks enemies, power ups and also proper score panels at this stage, so its a nice glimpse of the game coming together with some significant enough differences to hunt out. If you find anything else that is majorly different – please do get in touch and we’ll add to this page over time with credit.

With a huge thank you to Mark Greenshields for allowing the prototypes to be added to the site.
