ArcWar

1995 Finetime Software

Platform: PC (DOS)

Our next entry into the Games That Weren’t archive is an unfinished PC DOS shooter called ArcWar. A nice looking and early Galaga style game with a strange variety of enemies at this stage, including shooting tomatoes!

Whilst working through the archives of Mark Greenshields, we discovered a series of builds for the game at varying stages, including one final edition that includes music and sound effects, and which may even be the final version before it was abandoned.

We believe that the game was being developed by Finlay Munro, and had graphics by Wayne Billingham and David Bland. The game was intended as a bonus title to go alongside Tiny Troops on the PC version, which saw release on the Amiga, but not on PC and Amiga CD32 (A story for another day!).

In total there are 3 builds, and the final one we don’t believe is complete. There are approximately 10 attack waves before the game loops. It is plausible that this may have been the final game and done as something very quick – but we’ll hopefully learn more from Finlay in the future. For now, enjoy the game for yourself!

With a huge thank you to Mark Greenshields and Darren Melbourne for the opportunity to see this title preserved.
