An unconfirmed GTW for the C64 cames in the form of City Warriors. An advert was reportedly shown in the “Complete C64 Guide” on page 39, which mades us assume that a C64 version was in production.
A lot more research was needed, we didn’t know too much about the game or have the advert to hand at the time. Finally, we did get hold of it thanks to Stephen Stuttard and a set of scans – and it seems there was a mix up and the advert is for “New York Warriors” on that page, where there is no C64 version advertised.
However, there does seem to be a game out there with that name which is missing that has been highlighted thanks to Anonymous Contributor (whose information below triggered us to find the above scan), who says the following:
“Longshot, but since it’s unclear where the ad came from, this entry could refer to Slovenian magazine Svet Kompjutera. In e.g. issue 6 1989, page 54, under the title “COMMODORE KOMPLETI” (TRANSLATED: Commodore compilations), a game called City Warrior (no ‘s’) is advertised as being released in Sep 1988:

Whether this is the official release date or just the date of a particular compilation is not clear.
The other games in the same paragraph seem to be primarily games released in 1988 (like Salamander, Thunder Hawk and Chubby Gristle), so this should go for City Warrior as well. Note that some game names are abbreviated or even distorted, which may include City Warrior. E.g. Pogo Olympiad’s full name is Pogo Stick Olympics.
This ad is a regular in that particular magazine around 1988-1989.”
The magazine then said:
“The latest hits and the best thematic compilations at a good price: compilation + cassette (new, unrecorded) + VAT? = 24,000 din.”
Anonymous Contributor suggests that “this implies that the compilations are thematically collated. This could provide a clue as to what type of game City Warrior may be, although many possible themes are possible in any of the monthly compilations.
Interestingly, the publisher seems to have grabbed whatever is available, even previews. In the July 1988 compilation, a game called Xamalita is featured. No game for the C64 with that name exists, so this is most likely Xamitlu (https://www.gamesthatwerent.
Was City Warrior renamed accidently? At least the original source has been solved, but now it seems we’re looking for a completely different game than intended.
