I really admire Black Turk’s ambition to try and squeeze what many would feel are impossible games for the C64. He also attempted Sonic The Hedgehog and Snow Bros conversions which were never going to work, but it was fun … Continue reading
Another Kingdom is a nice single character based RPG title that was being developed back in 2010. Although seeming to come on well and shaping up nicely, it seems to have been abandoned with no further work completed on the … Continue reading
199? Unknown Platform: Atari 400/800/XE Our next entry in the archives is for the Atari 8-bit home computer platform, and is the early start of a fairly impressive conversion of Delphine’s Another World – though not by Delphine! It is … Continue reading
After the discovery of various bits and pieces which were created by Apex and that never saw the light of day, there remained a few demos which didn’t really tie into any particular GTW titles. So as the Rowland Brothers … Continue reading
A great looking game in similar style to the first part of Dynamic’s "Game Over", with some awesome graphics in similar style to those common with X-Ample games of the early 90’s. This game is not based on any moon … Continue reading
A well received game on the Amiga, “Apprentice” was to be another great release from Rainbow Arts in 1990. The game made its way into magazines, via double sided adverts, but as usual the game never surfaced on the C64. … Continue reading
An interesting little game from the late part of the 80’s, featuring music which Mark Wilson composed for Obliterator. This game involves controlling the main character on some kind of space craft, using arrow buttons with a pointer icon. There … Continue reading
What seems to be a very promising preview at the start, with a lot of really nice glossy presentation and graphics – when you start this preview, you are pretty much greeted by a static bitmap and some test sprites … Continue reading
Not too much to say here about this game at present. We know very little about it, but that god damn title tune is something I’ve heard somewhere before… that jingle…. but where?… a demo?… what?…. aghhh… Thanks to Warren … Continue reading
Our next Christmas 2024 update sees Games That Weren’t take a look at a series of early concepts and prototypes from the late Archer Maclean’s disks. This includes the first ever look at concepts for an abandoned Atari/Commodore sequel to … Continue reading

What do we have here you ask?… Well, a little while before Ocean Software grabbed the rights to Arkanoid, Firebird were looking to publish the game. Developer for Lynnsoft, Jake Simpson had spent some time producing a conversion of Arkanoid, … Continue reading
Back on our screens in 1988, we were graced by one of the greatest SEU’s of all time. Armalyte was released with an almighty impact, shaping the way all sideways SEU’s should be on the C64. With the first game’s … Continue reading
Just a very quick post to share a few pre-release versions of Hawkeye and Armalyte. Nothing to get too excited about, and the Hawkeye version has already been put out last year – just slightly under the radar. The purpose … Continue reading
Cyberdyne Systems burst onto the scene with their amazing debut game “Armalyte”. This horizontally scrolling shoot’em up was one of the finest on the Commodore 64, combining fantastic graphics with some very tough gameplay. As Games That Weren’t already shows, … Continue reading
There have been many Army Men games over the years, though one we weren’t aware of until recently was a Game Boy Advance version of Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes, developed by DC Studios. This handheld version was intended as a conversion of the N64, PlayStation, Dreamcast, and PC title. A Game Boy Color version was also reportedly in development at the time by a different, currently unknown studio. Continue reading
A really wonderful game produced by Timsoft, whom are well renound for their impressive C64 games in the late 90’s. The game is a polished single screen platformer, where you control a little blob with a hi-res overlay, collecting all … Continue reading
Arwag was to be an Ultima based game written by Ruben Spaans (aka Scroll/Megastyle) which was shaping up to be pretty good. Ruben explains more about the game: "A role-playing game similar to the older Ultima games. It was in … Continue reading
A cool little Bomberman clone with the name of "Assassins", is the next game in A to greet us, and for the GTW archives. This is a fair clone of the classic game by Hudson, and does its best to … Continue reading
