Dominator V1

Straight from the success of Last Ninja and just after the release of R-Type in the arcades, Mark Cale decided that he wanted to really see a R-Type C64 clone with graphics by Hugh Riley.

The result was to eventually become Dominator, but Dominator was originally to be developed by Jason Perkins, and Matt Gray wasn’t marked to do the music either.

Nope, Paul Hughes was the original developer on the game and got to work building the tape loader and also a title screen and a few sprites flying around. Rob Hubbard was also to provide music for the game (As confirmed in Paul’s source code for the loader).

After a promising start, unfortunately Paul was offered a job back at Ocean and snapped up the chance to go back, and hence Paul’s game was cancelled. It was later given to Jason Perkins who finished it back in 1989.

Unfortunately we have been unable to find any Rob Hubbard music, but there may never have been any. Additionally apart from a bit of loader source, its early days in terms of trying to find something running. We may soon be bringing you some sprites, and potentially the loader source if Paul gives permission.

It’s early days, but Dominator could have been a very different game indeed!…

Djinn

“Plan your strategy to save the good wizard from the evil Djinn. This supernatural spirit has materialized as a fire demon and has carried the good wizard off to his lair. You must fetch the wizard and transport him home.

Don’t drop him into the lava pit – he’ll turn into a ball of flame! If you can manage to get the wizard back to his castle, you’ll be endowed with magical powers to take vengeance on the evil Djinn.”

This pretty much sums up Djinn, a early game from Creative Software which was mentioned in their 1984 catelogue. The entry came with a screenshot which you can see, and was Commodore 64 only we believe.

Sadly nothing has surfaced of the game, so either it hasn’t been found and preserved yet, or it never got released for reasons unknown. We know little more about the game, but Gaz Spence made a good link to DragonHawk, which features a similar bird sprite and similiar style of shading on the castle as with the mountains. Therefore we may have our credits for this game to track down?

Was it a spiritual successor to DragonHawk? We hope to find out soon!

Dive Bomber

This was a simple BASIC Blitz clone produced by Adam Wade for Commodore Cracker. Adam Wade was famous for his Big Mouth Magazine that he released, so its hopeful that this one can be easily recovered. Maybe Adam even has some of the TTS games?

Brian Turner (Editor of CC) described the game as follows:

“I was recently sent 3 BASIC games, programmed by reader Adam Wade. When I got them I though “Wouldn’t it be a good idea to put these on the tape/disk over 3 issues as a good accompaniment to Jamie’s BASIC programming series, to show readers a bit of what you can do with basic?” So, I did. Here’s the first one with 2 more to come. It’s an updated version of “BOMBER” and you have to destroy enough of a city to make space to land your craft (Using an unlimited supply of bombs). The disk version also has savable hi-scores.”

Although there are hundreds of Blitz clones out there (myself guilty of contributing one to the C64 world), it will be good to preserve this one too!

Can you help us with this title?

Direct Death

A early preview of what looks like a Moon Patrol clone, with no obstacles or enemies as of yet.

Apart from a nice title screen, the game is quite lacking at the moment, with a simple car which moves left and right.

Plans for the game are unknown, or at what stage it reached. M Hartemink will hopefully help us with this game once he is tracked down.

A little preview, but not much else yet…

Dinnamic Donkey Duo

A very oddly named title which was to be released by the brother of RR Software head Rowan Veale.

The game was created by Lyndon Veale and was a simple static shooter which was written over the top of Slap and Tickle (with many old sprites still present).

It never appeared, so its early days for this one. A demo did actually appear on Commodore Cracker, and we can now present this and its two screens thanks to Vinny Mainolfi for passing on his disk. Sadly there isn’t much to see, but its a glimpse of what Lyndon was doing.

We believe that Lyndon was younger than Rowan and just wanted to be involved too with what his older brother was doing. We guess that as they got older, they decided to move on and do other things.

Dimension X

Dimension X is a game from Synapse Software, a futuristic tank-like game sort of like a cross between Encounter and Star Raiders.

Our contributor never saw any ads for a C64 version, however one magazine reviewed it and under the systems it was available for, they listed Atari and C64. The C64 version was confirmed by Wanderer when he got in touch with the game’s programmer Steve Hales:

Did you ever finish the C64 version of Synapse’s Dimension X? Ads were printed in early 80’s magazines but the game never saw the light of day. Any chance this game is around still?

No. It really never got complete. We did have parts of it working, but abandoned it early. The atari graphics hardware could do tricks the c64 graphics chips could not.

Is there any chance of recovering this code? There is a bit of a cult following of C64 users who like to see lost works in terms of old games.

Wish I could. Its long lost.

And so sadly as the search begins… it ends abruptly. The C64 version has been confirmed, but sadly the programmer has nothing of the game any longer and we know that there is not much to find.

We hope to be proven wrong and something turn up someday, but it is looking very very unlikely.

However, in October 2021 – a bizarre upload was highlighted to us by Santiago Cárdenas which had been added to CSDB recently by an odd cracker called “James Future”. The game is corrupt and missing a particular file to run.

We’re not sure if it is a genuine finding or some kind of elaborate fake, but hopefully someone will be able to figure out more from the files. What doesn’t quite add up is the crack date of 1985 and that Steve Hales was listed as the C64 developer, when we don’t believe he did any C64 coding.

We’ve added the preview to the archive for the time being if anyone fancies taking a look.

Digital

Digital is another puzzle game, and one which I haven’t had chance to try and figure out. If anyone can shed light on what the game is about, please let me know :)

It is a Polish game by Nostalgia productions, and it doesn’t seem to have got past this preview we are offering. This seems to be a fairly advanced preview, featuring pretty much complete titles and graphics throughout. The full game was to feature:

* More graphics
* Exclusive musics
* Working match game and level game mode (Match means 2 games between players, level game means player must win some levels to win the whole game)
* And many more

A bit more research required to find out if this game did get further or was even completed. We hope so anyway!

More soon on this one…

Diabolik

A preview of an up and coming game by Italian giants Simulmondo in 1992. Not much is known about the game, apart from the main character was based from an old Italian comic, called Diabolik. The character was a thief and an assassin, the “Armakuni’s” dress is his usual look for when he’s in action. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki /Diabolik

The preview itself just consists of a series of intro screens, followed by release details for other machines. So the game was due for the PC and Amiga too and actually got released. The game was actually released on the Amiga in a large series of games, all following the same style. http://hol.abime.net/343

The game basically was a kind of Metal Warrior/Saboteur style of game, and it seems that the C64 would have been host to a series of games. However it is likely that Simulmondo abandoned the C64 in favour of the 16-bit platforms, and hence this game was lost. Diabolik and its games appeared in around 1993 time.

More information is required on this game, including who was working on it. Quite possibly the same people who did Dylan Dog (Certainly the style was not too far off!) In 2010, Roberto Nicoletti spoke with Ivan Venturi and Nicola Ferioli and had the following to say:

“I’ve also talked about Diabolik to Ivan Venturi and Nicola Ferioli and at first time they did not remembered at all they have worked on it. Then I showed to Ivan the screenshot of the preview and he starts to remember a bit. Nicola Ferioli did not remember Diabolik also, but when at home he found through some old diskette the development floppy, with sources included.

I guess the case could be closed: they worked on it a couple of afternoon about 20 years ago but were too busy with other project to keep tracks in their memory. “

So within the archive we now have a disk copy of the intro containing some source code, but this is just for the intro sequence and no game. It seems the C64 intro was started, but no game was ever created with just an Amiga/PC version being produced in 1993.

Gaz Spence found that the trailer/demo was actually released by Simulmondo themselves as a bonus extra in Basket Play-Off. In the demo, it just says “Coming soon on your Amiga, PC VGA 256 colors”.  So it seems that that point a C64 development was off the cards. Perhaps it was never on the cards at all, and the intro demo that leaked was just produced as an advert for the game on other platforms.

Sadly it looks like a case closed on this one.

Devils Of The Deep

Along with Sword of Samurai, Devils of the Deep was to be yet another Fighting Fantasy game on the C64 from US Gold according to http://pdd.if-legends.org/ldp/bdp.html.

This game in particular was to be set in Atlantis and we presume would have been by the same developers using a version of The Quill.

However, like the others this never quite surfaced. Compared to the other games planned or released, this never really got a mention and its only the above website which seems to know of the games.

As a result its still very early days, but an entry none the less!

More information needed…

Detective Takashi

Now I can remember when this game first came about 10 years ago. After trying to locate my 10 year old site pages on Super Fighter for another entry, I discovered a news item I wrote on Lasse’s 8 directional scrolling detective game.

Things were progressing very well, with a small demo showing a cool character from a top down/slanted viewpoint who could move and scroll the screen in all 8 directions. Graphics were a bit sparse for the test demo, but gave enough of an indication of what was coming.

Unfortunately interest was lost in the project, and Lasse called it a day to concentrate on Metal Warrior 3 and 4. The code may well have been re-used in BOFH – Servers Under Siege, which Lasse did a year or so later.

A huge shame that this never progressed much further, as this could have been quite an interesting take on a detective game in this shape and form. This is likely to be all that ever existed of the game, so check it out if you haven’t already!
